Getting Started Checklist

Here's a small checklist of items for the first-time website owner.

Domain Name
- Do you own your own domain name? If not you can buy it as Network Solutions (http://www.netsol.com) for $35 per year. You don't need the website, or a place to host it, to secure a domain name.

For tips on choosing a domain name please see our publication, The Quick Guide to Marketing your Business on the Internet.

Images/Logo
- Do you have a logo already designed? If so can it be provided in a digital format, preferably high-resolution? If not there may be additional charges to convert a printed version to a digital version.

- Are there photos to be incorporated? Are they digital images or do they need to be scanned?

Body Copy
- Who will author the text for the website? Do you have text from an existing brochure or can we help author it for you?

ISP (Internet Service Provider)
- If you don't have a website who will host it? (where will it be stored?). We can provide Internet access from a local provider at a discounted price if needed - about $25 per month for a non-commerce site. They also have superior customer service.

Pages
- How many pages does the website really need? You'll certainly need a home page (a main page) but do you also need: a feedback page, product description pages, an About Our Company page, a Site Map page (for a larger site or an ecommerce site), a FAQ page, a Links page, a calender of events, a guest book, message board, coupons, or more?

Search Engines
- Is this a business folks would typically search for through a search engine such as Yahoo? Often the answer is no and the costs to be listed in a search engine would be far better spent toward print or direct mail advertising. This is almost always the case for a local business.

Email
- How many company email addresses do you need? (sales@yourdomain.com, Info@yourdomain.com, feedback@yourdomain.com, etc.)

Online Documentation
- Will you need to make any forms or manuals HREF="../ilable through the website? How many and in what format will they be provided?

Database
- Does the site need to display or accept specific information from a database?

Competition
- Have you visited your competitors sites to get a flavor of what design elements work for or against their site?
